On the inside they must negotiate their place in the prison’s hierarchy and sometimes make new sexual choices.。自从孩提之时，加惠（若尾文子 饰）便为医者华冈家女主人於継（高峰秀子 饰）的美貌所倾倒。因此当她长为婷婷玉立的少女后，宁愿舍弃优渥的生活，而下嫁到终日处理病患的华冈家。在前三年的岁月里，未曾谋面的丈夫云平（市川雷蔵 饰）四处修行，加惠与婆婆相敬如宾，幸福充实。时间转瞬即逝，云平结束修业，专心在家研究手术用麻醉药的制配，他屡挫屡战，从不放弃，家人在背后给了莫大的支持。而加惠却发现，婆婆似乎有意在丈夫面前刁难自己，她的心中充满矛盾……
本片根据有吉佐和子的同名小说改编，并荣获1968年电影旬报最佳男主角奖（市川雷藏）。此外，该小说自1960年起先后数次被搬上银幕。。
