吉里原是美军的一个士兵，第二次世界大战后退伍，仍留在巴黎学习绘画。他造诣颇高，但就是一幅画也卖不出去。他同一个法国歌手亨利十分要好，他们无忧无虑地打发日子。一次，吉里结识了一位年轻活泼的法国女郎李丝。吉里很快就喜欢上她了，但他们的约会却总是来也匆匆，去也匆匆，这使吉里颇为恼火，后来他从朋友处得知，李丝的双亲在战争中死去，她已同亨利订了婚，事虽如此，吉里却越来越爱李丝...。Akerman's Toute une nuit is a collection of vignettes depicting the fancies and dramatic moments of a number of people throughout one summer night.
