本剧通过小雨的车祸，表现了两个出租车司机的心理变化和心路历程，这是一部反映小人物的故事。贵生是一个憨厚，淳朴的青年农民，也是当代少有的保持着中国传统美德的青年农民，刘建设也是好人，好在他的良心发现，敢于面对过去承认自己的冒名顶替行为。贵生像大多数青年农民一样离开家乡，走进大都市，开始打工生涯。都市的现代文明在改变着每一个人，贵生却似乎没有什么改变，他只要做好自己的事情，用自己的汗水换钱给父亲治病，他没有都市青年的潇洒和丰富的精神生活，给父亲看病让他不能奢侈，一个馒头一顿饭的日子也让贵生过的开心。。In 1966, a famous actor (Peter O'Toole) is taken by a rowboat to a fabulous old hotel on an island in the middle of a lake.
